Syncretism is defined as the combination of different beliefs or practices. This term is an important topic within Beowulf, since the poem has obviously united two religious principles. Beowulf is dedicated to expressing and explaining the Germanic heroic code, but there are specific moments when Christianity and paganism over laps. Though Paganism focuses on victory, honor, and masculinity the author manages to add the act of forgiving your enemies, the significance of the monsters within the poem and Christian literature, the idea the all glory should be given to god since he holds your faith, and the pagan’s attempt to combine the Christian god with their beliefs. The narrator is likely imagining the sound, but claims he or she is hearing it because of sharp senses. In the beginning of the story, the narrator seems to be very caring to the old man. The narrator has no bad intentions toward the old man apart from his eye, which resembled that of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it (Poe 37). The obsessive interest in the old mans vulture-like eye forces the narrator to formulate a plan to murder the old man. The narrator confesses that the main reason for killing the old man was his eye: whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees-very gradually-I made up my mind to rid myself of the eye forever (34). The simple fact that the old mans eye is the one single motivation to murder proves the narrator is so unstable mentally that he or she must search for rationalization to kill. In the narrators mind murder is rationalized with an unreasonable fear of the eye. Throughout the story there is evidence and clues that suggest the narrator may be suffering from the mental illness schizophrenia. The narrator presents a few main behaviors that can be considered to be symptoms of schizophrenia, and one of them are the delusions he or she has during the story. For instance, an example of one of the narrators delusions is in the scene with the policeman. The narrator says, They heard!-they suspected!-they knew!-they were making a mockery of my horror (40)! The narrator is showing signs of referential delusions that happen when a person believes certain gestures or actions are specifically directed at them (American Psychiatric Association). Another clue is the hallucinations the narrator has throughout the story. These hallucinations are mostly auditory, which means the narrator perceives noises as being form the external world, when in reality they are only imaginations (American Psychiatric Association). Its clear the narrator experiences this symp tom when he or she says, It grew louder-louder-louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not (40). There is also the fact that it is physically impossible for someone to hear the beating heart of someone else without the proper equipment, so this noise was in the narrators head. The last main symptom of schizophrenia the narrator demonstrates is catatonic behaviors such as extreme muscle paralysis of the body and hyperactivity conduct. An example of this is in the scene when the old man is startled and wakes up, the narrator says, I kept quite still and said nothing. For a whole hour I did not move a muscle and in the meantime I did not hear him lie down (38). Another instance near the end of the story is when the narrator says, I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides [] I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards (40). It is obvious that the narrator of The Tell-Tale Heart shows signs of having a mental illness, which could very well be schizophrenia. The narrator hallucinates when hearing things that are impossible to be heard, and demonstrates behaviors that can be described as catatonic. No matter how much the narrator tries to prove his or her sanity, most readers would view the narrators argument as insane because the murder of the old man is motiveless, but also because the narrators confession to the murder comes across as premeditated and heartless. In contrast, some readers may make the argument that the narrator is actually sane after all. Some may say the narrators confidence in his ability to calculate and plan the murder shows sanity. Insane people are generally unsure of their actions, but the narrators determination and confidence does show a bit of sanity. Also, the narrator has every chance of getting away with the crime, but feels guilty for murdering the old man, which means the narrator must have a working conscience. The narrator also shows the ability to differentiate between right and wrong as shown in the story when the narrator takes care to dismember and hide the body. If the narrator is truly insane, he or she wouldnt go through such lengths to avoid detention. An insane person would act purely on impulse, not attempt to conceal a crime, and not feel guilty about it. The narrator defies all these conventions. In conclusion, The Tell-Tale Heart presents many points that proves its narrator is indeed insane. The narrator demonstrates the abnormal behaviors and symptoms of the mental illness schizophrenia. In the past, rural hospitals had to transport patients to larger city hospitals for specialized imaging. Today, imaging is less invasive, filmless, digital and stored on PAC’s, freeing up space. Increased digital filming allows for reduced exposure rates, beneficial for patient safety. This influx of technology with radiologic technology has created more jobs, producing higher salaries through specialized modalities, such as MRI’s and CT scanning. Through continued growth in technology, images will be developed with greater efficiency, as radiology defines itself. The technologist role in the medical field is to perform diagnostic imaging of specific body part(s), as ordered by the physician. They are to adjust and maintain the imaging equipment, prepare the patient for the procedure, explain the process and mostly, protect the patient and any caregiver from harmful radiation. There are some risks to the rad tech, such s being exposed to chemicals, causing harmful asthma and additional health complications; also, the strong magnetic force MRI scanners, can cause physiological changes. Depending on the locality of the radiologist’s job, which can be in the hospital or in a doctorà ¢â‚¬â„¢s office, to mention a few, will affect the salary. Also, the more specialized the technologist, the higher the salary. For example, techs that perform MRI’s, CT scan and mammography have received extensive training and are in a higher salary brackets. Personal characteristics that attract a potential radiologic tech candidate include a good under-standing of math, anatomy, biology, physiology and other sciences. The individual must be detail oriented, able to follow the physicians orders exactly. Radiologists must also understand how to operate complex machinery. The most common type of degree for a radiologic technologist is a two year Associate Degree. The individual must be licensed in his home state where he practices; however, requirements vary by state. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits educational and training programs in radiography. Courses include biology, anatomy, math, additional sciences, plus computer programming, patient care management, medical ethics and specific nursing procedures. A certain number of hours and hands on training is required in the hospital setting and doctor office. Once the successful radiologist has obtained the degree, he can continue training in more specialized radiologic departments. The basic field is diagnostic radiography. Specialized fields include: ) Sonography- uses high frequency sound in obstetrics, abdominal, cardiac and vascular. B) Fluoroscopy-live motion radiography (usually used to view digestive system, monitor administration of contrast to high lite vessels and organs or help position devices in the body. c) Computer tomography- (CT) provides cross sectional views d) MRI-builds 2D and 3D map of different tissue types in the body. e) Radiothera py-uses radiation to shrink cancerous cells in the body. f) Mammography-uses low dose x-ray to produce images of the breast. Cardiovascular and nuclear medicine techs also need extensive training for this specialized area. The daily routine of the radiologic technologist is to check and maintain the imaging equipment, receive orders from the physician, position the patient correctly to get exact area needed to be Imaged, operate computerized equipment to take image, record and store info. III CONCLUSION Radiologic technologist field is very important to me, because I have a handicapped brother, who is mentally challenged, with an incurable disease. The disease has affected his entire neurological state, physically, mentally, leaving him bedridden. His bones are very fragile and he develops pneumonia several times per year. His feeding often gets dislodged, whereas, most body parts and organs are affected. He has undergone basic diagnostic-ray, MRI, CT,Flouroscopy and my mom has undergone a cardiac catherization. This field covers every part of our body and as people are living longer and technology is improving in this field, I think it is a promising career. In summary, the radiologic technologist must be detail oriented, have interpersonal skills in working with doctors and patients. He/she must have an understanding of sciences, math, chemistry, have stamina, for long shifts and heavy lifting of patients, as well as work complex machines. This two year Associates Degree is obtainable with hands on training and experience, which helps one enter the job world. Radiologic technologist receive a good salary and healthcare is expected to see growth. Also, with technological advancements, there should be an increase in job demands and increased pay, especially with specialized fields of radiology. This field is very important to me because of the needs of my brother. I do see myself pursuing this Career, because of the benefit it offers to all of society, when in need. Also, the salary is inviting to me. This is a field that I can grow with through increased technology and specializing in the advanced programs.
